Standing Out by Standing Back: Being Discovered for Your Original Style
No matter what kind of personality you have, if your style speaks of who you really are, then you can stand out from the crowd just by standing back and without going overboard.
So express yourself by developing a unique style that’s truly your own with these simple steps:
1. Carefully assess your personal style. This is very crucial and needs careful thought. The results of your assessment will be the backbone of the style that you want to portray.
Decide if you’re the modern and fashion-forward type. Or perhaps, you may be a hippie. Or maybe you prefer to be traditional and classical. You can be daring as a punk or even as a nerd. There’s no such thing as a wrong style, as long as it is honest to who you really are.
2. Accentuate your assets. Everyone has flaws. Instead of focusing your energies on hiding them, focus on bringing attention to your best features instead, whether they’re your eyes, neck, or shoulders. Decide what feature of your body, or even your personality, you want to accentuate, and build your style around that.
3. Find a celebrity who has a similar taste as yours. Surely, there is a celebrity who, in one way or another, has a personality and taste similar to yours. You don’t have to mimic what they’re wearing. Just get ideas from them and add your own flavor to make the look more personal.
For instance, if you like David Beckham’s style and have seen him wearing skinny ties in a series of formal events, then you could incorporate the skinny tie to your outfit and evolve your look.
4. Dare to experiment with style. Casual clothes don’t need to be boring clothes. And formal clothes don’t need to be black. Try to mix and match pieces once in a while. Try a white coat with a black striped dress shirt inside, and finish up with a slim tie. You don’t need to wear neon colors or flashy bling-blings or crazy hats—but you may if you want to. Remember, you are looking for your own style. Don’t be afraid to go out of your comfort zone and allow room for mistakes.
But limit your experimentation to one item at a time. You want to stand out while standing back; you don’t want to stick out like a sore thumb.
5. Stay in shape. No matter how nice your clothes may be, they won’t help you if your beer belly is showing. It is a rule of thumb in fashion that clothes should fit perfectly on your body, and clothes just can’t hang well on an out-of-shape body, so getting in shape is really important.
Start by making an effort to exercise, and modify your diet to get rid of unnecessary fats. You won’t necessarily change the way your body looks instantly, but your knowledge that you’re eating and exercising virtuously would add to your confidence, manifest in the way you carry yourself, and make you look better.
6. Continuously cultivate and expand your personal style. Once you have discovered what works and what does not work for you, there should still be an urge to shake things up once in a while. Don’t let yourself stagnate. Keep your style fresh. That’s what real fashion is all about.
Unless you make a bold move to stand out from the crowd, you will always be just one of them. An original style that is well thought of will set you apart from others without making you look like a jerk. Whatever look appeals to your senses, your style should be uniquely you.
